The Ultimate Moving Day Checklist

Posted September 3, 2024 | by Signet Group Inc.

Moving days are busy and labour-intensive - but they don't have to be stressful. A well-planned checklist is your best friend on moving day. Here's the ultimate guide to help you navigate the big move with ease.

Confirm Moving Details

A few days before your move, confirm your moving arrangements. Make sure the moving truck can access your apartment building, and verify the availability of elevators or loading docks. Ensure you have all required permissions or reservations needed for move-in day.

Pack an Essentials Bag

Prepare a bag with everything you'll need for the first night in your new apartment. Include essentials like toiletries, a change of clothes, important documents, medications, and phone chargers. This will keep you from having to unpack immediately after a long day.

Secure Valuables

Transport valuables like jewelry, electronics, and important documents yourself to prevent them from getting lost or damaged. Keep these items in a separate, clearly labeled bag or box.

Measure your Space

Before moving large furniture, ensure it will fit through doorways, hallways, into your new apartment, and into your chosen space. Ask for a floorplan of your unit that shows room measurements before moving so you can plan what to bring with you and where you will put it.

Label Your Boxes

Clearly label all boxes with their contents and the room they belong in. This will streamline the unpacking process and help your movers know where to place each box in your new apartment.

Keep Cleaning Supplies Handy

Have a small kit of basic cleaning supplies accessible from the beginning of your move-in. You may need to clean your previous apartment as you move things out, and you may want to do some additional quick cleaning before settling large items down in your new apartment.

Check Utilities

Make sure utilities like electricity, water and internet are set up and working in your new apartment. Follow all instructions from your propeerty manager, and for any services you are responsible for setting up, ensure you have scheduled these to be activated on your move-in day.

Do a Final & First Walkthorugh

Before leaving your old apartment, do a final walkthrough to ensure nothing is left behind. Check closets, cabinets, and all rooms for any overlooked items. Similarly, do a walkthrough of your new apartment before moving items in. Report any damage to the unit or left-behind items to your property manager right away.

By following this checklist, you can make your move into your new apartment smooth and stress-free, allowing you to enjoy your new home right away.
